Individuals from the informal committees at Amplats were forging relationships with the DLF, some of which would fall by the wayside, while others would be long-lasting. The mission of the DLF was to engage with workers in a conversation and to provide solidarity at this critical moment just before the strike. It was in effect following the insurgency of the working class by engaging with pre-existing informal networks through the core leaders of the imminent strike. The DLF activists maintained that:

we are here to support you no matter what you want. We want you to invite us to the meetings, so that we can advise when it’s possible …. [we told them that] we need to form a worker committee or a striking committee that will raise some funds for the expense because if you are talking about mobilising farther to Northam, you will be needing money to transport you to that side.78
